Balanced feeding
Avoid seed-only feeding. Follow a balanced pellet, seed and produce plan appropriate to the bird and veterinary advice. During transitions, monitor daily weight and droppings.
Learn about budgerigar diet, enrichment, safe housing and signs that need a bird veterinarian.
This page is a starting point for responsible care, not a veterinary diagnosis. Needs vary with species, age and health. Verify the exact species and speak to an appropriately experienced veterinarian.
Australia’s inland arid grasslands and open country
Arid, variable wild climates do not justify abrupt cage temperature changes. Provide a stable ventilated home and safe flight opportunities.
No single universal room temperature is claimed. Avoid drafts, direct heat, cooking fumes and overheating.
Outdoor climate is not a thermostat setpoint. Each species needs its own husbandry plan.
Seed-only diets may be unbalanced. Discuss a suitable combination of formulated pellets, measured seeds and safe vegetables with an avian veterinarian. Provide clean water at all times and change diets gradually.
Provide safe movement space, suitable perches, regular rest and bird-safe enrichment. Avoid smoke, kitchen fumes and fumes from overheated nonstick cookware.
An avian veterinarian should assess persistent fluffed posture, not eating, droppings changes, breathing difficulty or unusual inactivity. Birds can conceal illness.
There is no universal household vaccination calendar for budgerigars across all countries. Track weight trends in grams; consult an avian veterinarian about exams and vaccination needs.
This checklist is not a substitute for an individual examination. Dated notes on significant changes can help at a veterinary visit.
EVIDENCE-INFORMED CARE
Guidance varies by exact species, age and medical conditions. A food a pet likes is not necessarily safe or nutritionally balanced.
Avoid seed-only feeding. Follow a balanced pellet, seed and produce plan appropriate to the bird and veterinary advice. During transitions, monitor daily weight and droppings.
Do not offer avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol or unidentified plants. Keep birds away from overheated nonstick/PTFE fumes, aerosols, fragrances and kitchen fumes.
Unbalanced diet, obesity, vitamin deficiency, respiratory illness and egg binding in some females are concerns. Monitor activity, feathers, droppings and weight.
Open-mouth breathing, pronounced tail bobbing while breathing, staying on the cage floor, loss of balance or straining requires urgent avian veterinary care.
